Finally!

Sorry it has been so long since an update. A lot has been going on. To take you back a bit, on Feb 1st we noticed at bath time that Connor actually broke his cast! Not on the affected side but the support side. I called Shriners and they said to find a way to reinforce it. Andy, being the engineer that he is, got some doll rod and we had red duct tape! Well his cast was fixed to say the least but it was no longer a blue cast! For the next week we kept him to the couch and wheel chair so he didn't compromise the cast any further. That was probably the hardest week. He was playing on the floor for a couple weeks and then was back to the chair, he was not happy!

We went to Shriners on Friday, Feb 8th, and upon arrival before even getting x-rays, THEY CUT THE CAST OFF!!!!!!! The look on his face was priceless! He was so thrilled he was free! We were there for about 2 hours. Mostly waiting for x-ray and the doctors, it was clinic day so very busy. The doctor finally made it to us. He started by showing us his x-ray and said he is healing beautifully and showed us exactly what they did and showed us the pin which is very hard to miss! He went on to talk to Connor and the PT who was there to help him and said he will probably be sore for a few days, as he was saying this Connor was completely bending his knee without any tension or pain and moving his leg out to the side again without pain. The doctor was kind of shocked. He even said "well, I was going to put him in a spica brace to keep his legs separate and ease him out so the pain wouldn't be so bad but I am not going too. He looks to be doing pretty well." So we dodged the brace bullet! PT said want to try walking? Of course Connor thought sweet gonna get down and run. Well he is still on restrictions, non weight bearing on the right leg for 2 more weeks. Well he got a walker and never looked back. He has been everywhere and is loving it! He was able to take a bath and boy did he need it! We got home and first thing was bath time! He was in there for an hour!!! He missed bath time! The incision healed beautifully! It is about 3 1/2" long. At the top of the incision you can feel the pin.

We go back in another 5 weeks to see how he's doing. By this time he will probably be walking and running. Trying to keep him to not put weight on his right leg is hard because he says "but mommy it doesn't hurt!" Which is great but there is still healing to be done. After 2 weeks he will be able to do toe touch which is very little weight on that leg but I think once that happens he will want to be off and running so I may keep him non weight bearing for 3 weeks or so. He's not complaining that he can't use his leg so I don't see an issue with it now. At the next appointment we will probably discuss all that he can start doing and can't do. We will also discuss when the pin will be removed. Because of how great he was moving his leg on Friday they even said PT wasn't needed. All we had to do was stretch and bend his leg with him and to keep it moving so it doesn't get stiff or sore. So another stress that has been taken away!!

In all of this Andy and I are so incredibly proud of Connor! His Can-Do attitude and amazing personality is something I admire!! This has been hard for Brenden and Macie as well. Both of them had a few times when they seemed sad or angry. We made sure to give them the attention they needed as well! All the kids have been playing all weekend together and Connor was sad to see Brenden go to school today but he looks happy now hopping around the house and seeing his smile and watching Macie chase him!

Thank you for all the prayers and support! We are one step closer to getting both feet on the ground!!

Here are just a few pics. I will have a couple more later including his x-ray!
